The average person has between fifty and ninety thousand thoughts a day, but ninety percent of those thoughts are the same thoughts as the day before. I was told this by a woman about to pay four thousand pounds for a Japanese water purifier. She reasoned that as the human brain is seventy eight percent water, the quality of people’s thoughts would be improved by drinking better quality water. She wanted to make her purified water available to everyone and asked us if she could keep her four thousand pound water purifier at the community centre. She imagined people coming to the centre for all their drinking water needs, filling up bottles as if we were a well. Of course, because the water purifier was so expensive someone would have to be keeping an eye on it at all times.

“How would that work?” I asked her. She wasn’t sure.

“You see?” she said. “This is why we need to be putting better quality water into our bodies, so our brains can think better.”
